Syphilis

It is a sexually transmitted infectious disease caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. Humans are the only host of this bacterium.
Transmission occurs most often during sexual intercourse, infection through objects is rare. It is most common in people aged 15 to 30 years.
It affects various organs, skin, cardiovascular, musculoskeletal and central nervous systems.
Without treatment, the disease is characterized by three stages, the last of which causes serious damage to the body, which is irreversible and can lead to death.
The disease is transmitted from mother to fetus. If this happens, the newborn will receive damage to several organs, which sometimes ends in death or have serious irreversible consequences.
The disease was severe mainly in the pre-antibiotic era, when about 10% of the population was affected by syphilis. Today, this can only be a problem in developing countries where there is a lack of medical care. In developed countries, antibiotics (penicillins) are successfully treated, so the only difficulty is not to lose sight of the disease and start treatment on time.
Syphilis is subject to mandatory control, which means that if a doctor finds a disease in a patient, he is obliged to transmit this information to the local sanitary and epidemiological station, with which he then participates in the search for all sexual contacts of the patient, which must be investigated for the detection of the disease.
Causes of syphilis
The disease occurs after the penetration of bacteria into the body, which occurs after a violation of the surface of the skin or mucous membranes. It most often occurs in the mouth or on the genitals.
In the place where the bacterium enters the body, it begins to multiply, causing a symptom typical of the first stage of syphilis. In addition, the infection spreads through the blood and lymph vessels and affects the lymph nodes and other organs. Depending on the damage to individual organs, further manifestations of the disease are possible.
Infection most often occurs during sexual intercourse with an infected person (infection occurs in about 1/3 of people). In addition, transmission from mother to fetus is possible when bacteria enter the body (transplacental transmission). In the past, there was also a risk of infection transmission through blood transfusion, which is now almost impossible due to detailed blood donation tests. Transmission by infected objects is also more theoretical, since Treponema pallidum is very sensitive to any external influences and dies very quickly outside the host organism.
Risk factors for syphilis
Risk factors include unprotected sexual intercourse, especially with a casual partner.
The risks also include drug addiction, which could theoretically lead to needle infection.
Prevention of syphilis
Prevention is primarily to avoid risk factors. In addition, as a preventive measure for the development of congenital syphilis, it is currently mandatory for a mother to undergo an examination at the beginning of pregnancy, which is based on blood samples.
It should be emphasized that if symptoms of the disease are detected, you should immediately consult a doctor at the first symptoms. It is important to understand that if left untreated, the disease progresses and can have fatal consequences. In addition, of course, a person is a source of infection for his environment (sexual partner/partners).
And last but not least, the treatment of syphilis at the initial stage is very simple, unlike the subsequent stages, when irreversible changes can occur that doctors can no longer fix.
