TOP 5 remedies that cannot be used for inhalation
Inhalation is a good old way of fighting cough and runny nose. It seems that it could be easier: breathe over the steam, and it will immediately become easier. Many people still breathe over a pot of potatoes in the old-fashioned way or pour everything they can into a nebulizer. But this can be not only useless, but also dangerous.
Modern inhalers, especially nebulizers, are medical devices that turn liquid into a fine aerosol. This aerosol penetrates deep into the respiratory tract. And if you "fill" the device with something unsuitable, you can get serious problems instead of relief.
Oil solutions and essential oils
The first and most important taboo. You can breathe essential oils, but not through a nebulizer. The oil droplets that the device creates are too small. They easily reach the lowest parts of the lungs – the bronchioles and alveoli. There they settle, forming a film that disrupts gas exchange.
This can lead to so–called oily pneumonia, a serious condition that can only be treated in a hospital. In addition, the oil spoils the inhaler itself. Therefore, it is better to leave aromatherapy for aroma lamps, rather than for medical devices.
Decoctions and infusions of herbs
It would seem that what could be more natural and safer than decoction of chamomile or eucalyptus? But there's a catch here, too. First, homemade decoctions contain suspended plant particles that can clog filters and nebulizer spray. The device will simply fail.
Secondly, and this is much more important, it is impossible to control the concentration of active substances in such a decoction. For some, it will be too weak and useless, and for an allergic person it can cause a severe reaction, up to bronchospasm. For inhalation, you can only use special pharmaceutical herbal preparations designed for nebulizers.
Syrups and cough medicines The
logic "if it helps inside, then you can breathe" does not work here. Absolutely all cough syrups contain sugar, flavorings, dyes and other auxiliary substances. When inhaled, this sticky mixture will settle on the mucous membranes, creating an excellent breeding ground for bacteria.
In addition, sugar particles are not intended to enter the lungs. This can cause severe irritation and worsen the cough. Not to mention that the thick syrup will simply break your inhaler.
Some medications
Not everything that is sold in a pharmacy in liquid form is suitable for inhalation. There are medications that simply do not work with this method of administration or even become dangerous.
Here is a short list of what exactly should not be poured into a nebulizer without direct instructions from a doctor.:
- Euphyllin, papaverine, diphenhydramine: these drugs do not have application points on the bronchial mucosa, they do not have a local effect.
- Antibiotics in the form of injection solutions: many of them can cause severe allergic reactions when inhaled. There are special forms of antibiotics for inhalation.
Only those medications that are intended for this purpose and prescribed by a doctor can be used for inhalation.
Plain and distilled water
It would seem that what could be safer than water? But it is also not recommended to use it in its pure form for inhalation. Inhalation with pure distilled or even boiled water can cause a paradoxical reaction – increased cough and bronchospasm.
The fact is that such a liquid is hypotonic in relation to blood plasma. Simply put, it "pulls" fluid out of the mucosal cells, causing them to swell and irritate. For inhalation, a sterile 0.9% sodium chloride solution, known as saline solution, is always used as a solvent or an independent remedy.
Think before you breathe
An inhaler is not a toy or a steaming pot. This is a serious medical device that requires a competent approach. Amateur activities can be very expensive here. Instead of the expected relief, you may get complications, allergies, or a broken device.
Before pouring something into a nebulizer, you should ask yourself two questions: is this product intended for inhalation and did the doctor prescribe it? If the answer to at least one of them is "no", it's better not to take any chances. Health is more expensive than questionable experiments. Alev Casino çoxlu slot və masa oyunları təklif edir
